What's the Problem With Sin and Sexuality?

Human Nature

It's been one of man's weaknesses throughout time, sin and sexuality. Sex in the context of what God had intended it for is good. But, as in most things we take it and allow sin to pervert and twist it into something that destroys lives.

Sin only plants the seed, then knowing human nature, lets us hang ourselves from there.

So the question is, how bad is it? Well, there surely isn't any lack of temptations with the addition of the internet to the list of media options. The recent findings of 33 government employees, 4-25-10, were found looking at porno during working hours. Some were even lawyers and management types consuming up to 6 hours of porno daily.

Knowing they must have been monitored and still willing to chance it shows you the addiction that sexual material can have.

Big Names Fall

Throughout time many men and women have fallen to this sin temptation. But, lets look at some that knew how sin works and still fell prey to it's attraction.

Jim Bakker - has become best known for his adultery scandal in which Bakker and Fletcher committed adultery with a church secretary in 1980 and then arranged a payment to keep her quiet.

The scandal broke in March 1987 after the revelations were made public by rival evangelists, John Ankerberg and Jimmy Swaggart. Swaggart's own televangelism empire would collapse soon after Bakker's after he was caught soliciting sex from a prostitute. Jim Bakker was indicted in 1988 and found guilty on counts of mail and wire fraud related to his sale of memberships in Heritage USA.

Jimmy Swaggart - In 1988, Swaggart was implicated in a sex scandal involving a prostitute that resulted initially in his suspension and ultimately Swaggart was defrocked and removed from the ministry by the Assemblies of God. Three years later, Swaggart was again implicated in a sex scandal involving a prostitute. As a result, Swaggart's current ministries are non-affiliated and non-denominational.

John Hagee - the leader of the charismatic Trinity Church in 1975 and was the father of two children. John Hagee had an adulterous affair with a woman and admitted to immorality in front of his church. Pastor John Hagee then divorced the mother of his two children and married a younger woman (Diana Castro, now Diana Hagee) from that same congregation. Pastor John Hagee willfully abused his position of trust and power to take advantage of a younger gullible woman and cheat on his wife.

Ted Haggard - the pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado and was the president of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) from 2003 until November 2006.

In 2006 it was alleged that Haggard had been regularly visiting a male prostitute who also provided him with methamphetamine. Haggard admitted his wrongdoing and resigned as pastor of New Life church and as president of the NAE.

In January 2009, Haggard admitted to a second homosexual relationship with a male church member on CNN-TV and other national media, and when asked, would not directly answer a question about his other possible homosexual relationships.

Now, there are many more good evangelists that have not taken this path, but we have to recognize the powerful influence of sin. Also, how this weapon of sin, sexuality, can make even a man of God forget about the consequences of their actions.

Overcoming Sexual Temptations

A task much easier said than done. Like all of sin's seeds it plants, the seed of sexuality has brought some of the most powerful and wealthy men to shame. Lets be clear, all of us allow these things to happen. Sin only plants the seed, we continue to take action and cultivate it.

Why do I pick on this subject? I guess because it's so harmful, yet is saturated in our society. The days of hiding a playboy under the mattress is mild compared to what's available today. There's no embarrassment or shame even when caught.

Don't even try to protest the spread of this sinful seed, it's a billion dollar business that's not going anywhere. Is it the only bad apple in the basket? Of course not, but if we understand sin it's then that we know how sneaky and destructive it is.

It really comes down to the one thing a lot of people don't want to hear, responsibility for ones self. Your the only one that can change that.

RB,

This is an unfortunate reality of this dreadful sin and the cause of great damage not only to individuals, families, and churches but perhaps more importantly, to the credibility of Christianity. May the Lord have mercy on our souls.

Great truth!!

Forever His,

RevLady, thanks for the comment. This has been the downfall of many a person. It's good that God has a lot of mercy to hand out because God knows we need it.

I remember when Dr. James Dobson was on a committee on Poronograpy, can't remember the name of the committee, but I have heard his say many, many times that what is going on in our world with poronography is hideous and depraved beyond belief. It is a deadly and pervasive societal sin. I agree with RevLady, may God have mery on our souls.

Lambservant, I am thankful that our earthly time is limited. I often think that this passage in time is just a training ground for the next step. Some use it for sinful gratification, others for preparation.

Regards...
